Training in later life
These notes combine advice from 20 reviewed passages across 11 workouts.
Overview
Section titled “Overview”Training principles
Section titled “Training principles”Age does not have to end demanding training. Handstands remain viable into older age, and many people continue doing them until they are sixty or seventy. A backflip can come in two or three weeks, but after a certain age you stop doing backflips. A man performs planche at fifty-five. [5] [9]
Plank performance can improve with age. Most plank record holders are older, including a fifty-eight-year-old woman who held for four hours, and a man broke a plank record at sixty. [8] [19]
Programming
Section titled “Programming”Resistance training is suitable for older adults, and beginners should start gradually rather than suddenly loading heavy weights. Weight training can be started after forty, even after fifty or sixty; people in their seventies and eighties do it. [12] [20]
Continuing bend-and-rise practice regularly gives better results. [17]
Movement options
Section titled “Movement options”Gymnastics remains available in later life. Older-adult gymnastics groups perform collectively and go to competitions. Gymnastics exists for people over thirty and over fifty; they perform gymnastics elements and group formations such as pyramids without very high movements. [3] [4]
Gymnastics for Everyone is an option for older adults, teaching skills such as forward rolls, with competitions for people over fifty. [11]
Ballet positions, leg positions, and stretching can be practiced later in life. [10]
