Shoulder Press
These notes combine advice from 24 reviewed passages across 10 workouts.
Overview
Section titled “Overview”Shoulder press is used as strength-focused auxiliary work for gymnastics. It develops weighted overhead pressing capacity that can prepare the arms for handstand push-ups and may make those bodyweight presses feel easier later. [8] [9] [10]
A sound standing repetition requires a braced, upright trunk, a straight load path over the chest, and a controlled descent that lasts roughly twice as long as the upward press. [7] [11] [15]
Standing technique
Section titled “Standing technique”Brace the abdomen and trunk before pressing. Stay upright, look forward, avoid bending farther than the movement requires, and exhale as you push. Keep the weights traveling straight over the chest without letting them drift forward or too far backward. [11] [15]
Grip cues depend on the version being performed. One setup keeps the dumbbells sideways and avoids rotating them into an Arnold-press angle. Later dumbbell setups use a slight inward angle, sometimes with the shoulders held down. [1] [16] [21]
When the selected version uses an upward-and-back path, watch yourself during the repetition so you can check the position visually. [2]
Range and controlled lowering
Section titled “Range and controlled lowering”Use as much available range as possible while preserving flexibility. During full repetitions, lower the dumbbell until its head touches the shoulder without adding unnecessary rotation, then control the descent for roughly twice the duration of the ascent. [3] [6] [7]
A specific vertical hold variation uses different instructions. Maintain the prescribed completely vertical right-angle position, allow the shoulders to rise toward the ears and return, and hold the weight there instead of lowering farther. [5]
With deep dumbbell pressing, lowering as far as possible may make the pulling phase easier to feel. [24]
Supported and resistance variations
Section titled “Supported and resistance variations”For the incline dumbbell shoulder press, set the bench around 60 to 70 degrees. Keep the hips at the bottom of the bench and support the back fully. Hold the arms slightly forward, draw the shoulders down, angle the dumbbells inward, lower fully, breathe, and press upward without losing the supported position. [21] [22] [23]
For the wall variation, press with both arms through a full down-and-up range. Keep the joints straight so the shoulders produce the movement. [14]
For the band variation, stand inside the loop and keep the band routed outside the body before pressing upward. [20]
The equipment terminology calls the barbell version an overhead barbell press and the dumbbell version a shoulder press. [19]
Programming and skill transfer
Section titled “Programming and skill transfer”In gymnastics-focused programming, movement performance is the main goal. Shoulder press and other weighted exercises serve as auxiliary work that can strengthen the patterns needed for harder skills, including handstand push-ups. [8] [9] [10]
Longer handstand holds still require regular handstand practice. Bench pressing and shoulder pressing cannot replace repeated practice of the balance skill itself. [13]
Treat the shoulder press as strength work and build the load as current ability improves. A specific progression rule is to add a small amount of resistance after completing ten full repetitions. [12] [18]
