Muscle pump
These notes combine advice from 21 reviewed passages across 18 workouts.
Overview
Section titled “Overview”The pump is not the same as muscle development. Development comes from full-range repetitions in which the muscle lengthens and shortens, while short or partial repetitions mainly produce a pump. [10] [11] [12] [13] [14] [15] [17] [19]
How long the pump lasts
Section titled “How long the pump lasts”Pump and muscle development
Section titled “Pump and muscle development”For muscle development, use a full range of motion so the muscle lengthens and shortens. Short or partial repetitions mainly pump blood into the muscle and create swelling; they do not by themselves develop it. Half form does not work for this purpose, so stay in proper form. [10] [11] [12] [13] [14] [15] [17] [19]
Aim to open the joint to about 90 to 95 percent of its range rather than stopping at around 70 percent, and open slowly through the movement. [13] [15] [17]
The pump in training
Section titled “The pump in training”You can check the pump’s effect directly. Measure the biceps circumference when you are not training, then do 60 push-ups and measure again to compare the two values. [20]
In pulling work, the pump can become a real obstacle. After a certain number of repetitions the body pumps up and pulling becomes hard to continue; getting past that block is the challenge. [6]
A pump in the legs can feel different from a pump in the chest. Leg training can leave a person feeling strange, as if the body has become smaller. [1]
A low-bar variation challenges the biceps somewhat and produces a pump. [21]
Managing the pump
Section titled “Managing the pump”The pump in competition
Section titled “The pump in competition”Fitness competitors use the pump deliberately before going on stage. They do many partial repetitions, such as 50 quarter reps or 30 half push-ups, to swell the muscles quickly. [3] [16] [18]
During regular training, those same competitors work in full form. The quick partial pumping is reserved for just before competition, so that blood loads into the muscles and they look fuller on stage; a competitor who is 40 can appear as 42. [18]
