Headstand

These notes combine advice from 33 reviewed passages across 6 workouts.

A headstand is a balance built on three floor contacts: the head and both hands. Its bent progression develops balance and abdominal engagement while teaching positioning that can carry over to handstand practice. [2] [4]

Arrange the contacts as a triangle, with the head at the apex and the hands at the two lower points. Aim for an equilateral shape and avoid placing the head and hands in one line. [2] [8] [32]

Keep both hands where you can see them. Turn them to a comfortable angle between about 45 degrees and fully turned, and adjust the finger direction when that improves comfort without losing the triangular base. [3] [8] [32]

Start with the body bent at about 90 degrees before opening upward. Keep both feet visible and hold them between the extremes of lifting too high and hanging too low. [4] [18]

For the demonstrated elbow-assisted tripod entry, place one elbow and then the other, draw them inward, and lift after the position is established. [17]

Push gradually into the floor through the hands instead of trying to lift with the hips alone. Insufficient hand pressure can keep the lift low. [10] [12]

Continue the rise gradually and slowly through its final part instead of accelerating at the end. [26]

If the demonstrated head-supported position becomes difficult, bring the head more upright and higher. This adjustment allows more use of the back. [29]

Use the head as the third support while directing a large share of the load into the hands. The exact cue varied: several corrections called for most or all of the load in the hands, while a tripod-specific correction required the head to share the load because complete hand loading begins to turn the position into a handstand. [6] [9] [16] [24]

Visible activity in the shoulder muscles during the hold can help an experienced observer judge whether pressure is reaching the hands. [25]

When descending backward, tuck the head inward. [5]

Another controlled descent begins by opening the feet and lowering one foot. This shifts the weight backward into the exit. [22]
