Calf Raise

These notes combine advice from 5 reviewed passages across 3 workouts.

A calf raise loads the calves by lifting the heels and rising onto the toes. Reaching the tips of the toes requires balance because the lower body may shift during the ascent. [3] [4] [5]

Begin with the feet pointing forward and keep them from opening too far. Rise all the way onto the tips of the toes. A small heel lift does not complete the intended range. Lower after reaching the top position. [3] [4] [5]

During the demonstrated slow variation, correct any lower-body movement and rise gradually while maintaining balance. [5]

Tempo can change with the purpose of the set. For the specified unweighted strength variation, use a fast ascent and a slow descent. This differs from the slow ascent used when emphasizing balance and control. [1] [5]

Standing places body weight through the feet. A less-loaded alternative can be used as a warm-up or when the standing version is difficult. Add weight over the foot when that variation needs more resistance. [2]
