Contralateral limb coordination

These notes combine advice from 26 reviewed passages across 16 workouts.

Contralateral limb coordination is the pairing of opposite limbs in movement: the right arm works with the left leg, and the left arm works with the right leg. The body uses this cross pattern naturally in running, where a forward foot is matched by the opposite hand. [1] [2] [9] [20]

The main technical demand is avoiding the same-side pairing. The most common problem is pulling the same-side arm and leg together, such as the left arm with the left knee at the same time; that pairing is incorrect. [14]

The basic rule is to coordinate opposite sides. A pull to one side pairs with a turn to the opposite side, and the cross pattern pairs the left hand with the right foot and the right hand with the left foot. [1] [2] [20]

When you run, the body does this automatically: if the left foot is forward, the right hand is forward. That is the running position. [9]

For the arm drill, think of the arms like a running position: when the left side lifts, it moves toward the right, and keep the heel down. [10]

In the airborne running pattern, jump into the cross position and show it clearly in the air, giving the angle as much as possible without folding down. Make the pull dynamic and explosive, use the arms while airborne, and pull yourself in fully. [6] [7] [8]

The arm action is the harder part of this pattern, and it is the part that tends to get left out. [8]

In a cross crunch, bring the right elbow toward the left knee and the left elbow toward the right knee, alternating sides. [12] [13]

The bicycle crunch works the same way: right elbow to the left, left elbow to the right. [17]

For the knee-to-opposite-elbow movement, raise the feet and place the hands behind the head, then bring the left knee toward the right elbow. [4]

Let the knee touch lightly and use the opposite arm, as in running. [5]

In the push-up variation, open the opposite leg and arm together: right leg with left arm, then left leg with right arm. Open the body, turn, and enter with the arm open. [3]

In another version, lift one foot while moving the opposite hand, lower into a push-up, and push back without letting the other foot touch the floor. [11]

In bird dog, start from a hands-and-knees position and extend the opposite arm and leg to the maximum. Keep the knee and toes tense, and on the return touch lightly without lowering the limbs. [21] [22] [23] [24]

Bring the working arm a little closer to the head; this angle is better. [26]

The bird box variation follows the same idea: extend the opposite hand and foot fully, then draw them inward and bring them together. [25]

In the cross drill, touch the right foot to the left hand, go about halfway, then pull back. [18]

In the step-back-and-kick pattern, place the kick diagonally at the point where the opposite hand was lifted, then pass through from the inside. [19]

When walking the cross-body pattern, do not keep the arms straight. Walk more steadily and slowly, drawing the knee up together with the opposite arm. [15]

The stone movement starts with one knee on the floor and the opposite hand forward, touching the elbow tip to the foot tip. Later, do it standing: try to touch the right elbow tip toward the left foot tip as slowly as possible. [16]
