These notes combine advice from 35 reviewed passages across 26 workouts.

Bodyweight skills are sensitive to how much the athlete weighs and where that weight sits. Heavier bodies make static and acrobatic skills harder, and losing excess weight makes them feel noticeably easier. Leg weight matters most: lighter legs make planche and front lever easier because less weight hangs behind the balance point, while longer legs and greater height shift weight farther back and demand more shoulder elevation. The more you weigh, the harder a bodyweight skill becomes. This applies to the whole body, and non-muscular mass adds the most load, because you have to move your own body. A person carrying extra fat struggles with movements that would feel light if that mass were gone. Losing a few kilos of excess weight can make the same movements feel noticeably easier. Leg weight is a major factor in static holds. Lighter legs make planche and front lever easier, because less weight hangs behind the balance point. The same applies to the back lever: considerable weight in the legs makes it harder, like a 60-kilogram person gaining 15 to 20 kilograms and then doing the movements. Some planche athletes keep their legs light by not training them, which reduces the weight they have to hold. [2] [11] [13] [16] [21]

Body proportions change the leverage. Longer legs and greater height shift the weight farther back, so you need more shoulder elevation to hold the position. Even a few centimeters of height can make a real difference. Planche advice is often based on the advisor’s own height: shorter athletes may reach it in a few months, while longer-limbed athletes with strong leg muscles need more work. [5] [9]

Technique can overcome a lot of mass. A very heavy person can hold a handstand with good technique, while excess fat or unfavorable proportions can limit planche. Planche ability is not directly proportional to overall body size, and both thin and large athletes can hold it. [3] [20]

Full and straddle planche variations are easier with less leg muscle or mass, and only somewhat harder otherwise, not impossible. Upper-body strength supports a rigid hold. Full planche is extremely rare and is especially hard with muscular legs, because the weight sits behind the balance point. Gymnasts, whose strong and heavy leg muscles are needed for powerful tumbling, can find planche somewhat harder for that reason. [19] [26] [27]

A heavier person’s straddle can be stronger and more effective than a lighter person’s long hold. Some planche athletes are overrated because their lower bodies carry very little weight, such as from injured or extremely thin legs, which makes the hold easier for them. [4] [6]

Larger athletes tend to rely on large muscle groups and can struggle to use the smaller ones, which pulls them down in bodyweight skills. Handstand practitioners tend to have a good physique, and heavier people can do acrobatics, but static skills are a separate level. [23] [28]

Static skills are largely endurance-based, and a less bulky body helps with rapid rotation. Different apparatuses load the body differently, with more shoulder loading on the horse and more core bracing on the bars. Extreme push-up records are explained by a large bodyweight difference and the record holder’s exceptionally high-volume practice. [1] [17]

Train the whole body with your own bodyweight rather than only the upper body. Strong legs contribute to stability and strength, and a well-rounded body supports quality skill work. [7] [30]

Develop the skills first and only then gain substantial size. Gaining size first can make the skills hard to develop, and some form is lost afterward, though most of it remains. [25]

Legs can become thicker without preventing these movements, as long as flexibility is maintained. [24]

For a front lever, you have two paths: reduce leg weight or train the shoulders properly. Both can work, and the choice is yours. [32]

Power moves and acrobatics generally require being several kilos below a generic height-based ideal weight, and calisthenics calls for an even lighter target, to combine strength with lightness. [35]
