Skin the Cat
These notes combine advice from 83 reviewed passages across 26 workouts.
Overview
Section titled “Overview”Skin the Cat is a hanging transition in which the body passes through the arms into an inverted or floorward position and then returns through the same general path. [1] [67]
The movement is used for ring preparation, shoulder mobility, tucked abdominal work, shoulder strength, and transitions into other skills. It also serves as a fundamental early step toward back-lever work. [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [17]
Basic technique
Section titled “Basic technique”For a compact transition, bring the knees and head close together and keep the body closed. Pull the feet inward as you descend, then use the same compact position to lift back up. [2] [18]
A separate partial variation uses bent legs to bring the hips briefly into a tuck front-lever position. Keep the bar near hip height and return after completing roughly half of the Skin the Cat path. [10]
The exact route depends on the drill. One version avoided passing through the inside and emphasized opening the shoulders downward. Another kept the feet inside, reached parallel, and returned from there. [9] [11]
Keep the hands relatively narrow and engage the lats and scapular area. In the bar transition, retain the arm position and fold inward without deliberately rotating the shoulders. At the specified point, brace the abdomen to remain upright and maintain lat engagement during the backward opening. [12] [21] [23] [39] [63]
When descending from above, stay upright and lower slowly without folding early. Let the hips pass first, narrow the angle, and avoid forming a bridge. After passing through, finish straight instead of returning to a pronounced C shape. [20] [31] [36]
First develop the sensation of a slow descent. In the open-leg drill, descend vertically under control with the feet spread and the body tense. Bent legs were observed to pull the body farther downward in that version. [24] [29]
Use only the assigned opening range. Choose a fixed visual target, move the gaze gradually from the floor toward the front, and continue looking forward during the slow descent. [26] [27] [30]
Open the upper body and legs together. Keep the chest relatively closed and lift the upper body only as much as needed to balance the position. [51] [52]
A basic ring-release variation used a small arch while descending toward the floor. Under downward load, grip difficulty was treated as normal, with a slight inward grip adjustment at parallel. [28] [61]
Progressions and equipment
Section titled “Progressions and equipment”Skin the Cat provides an early route into back-lever training. Back-lever combinations used an entry from above or an opening from the Skin the Cat or tuck-planche position. [7] [8] [17] [32]
Use repeated visits and counted time in the lower position to learn its location before adding a direct opening. For closed-leg entry, progress through Skin the Cat, an open-leg version, and then a closed-leg version before attempting the direct closed position. [34] [37] [42]
The 540-degree variation requires a compact passage. Keep the knees together and preserve contact between the lat area and the arm. Drawing the knees inward reduces the body’s size, while straight-leg passage was reserved for greater flexibility. The demonstrated ability to reach the feet was treated as sufficient for comfortable passage in that drill. [13] [14] [15]
Skill connections
Section titled “Skill connections”The movement also appeared in flows involving planche, cross, handstand, straddle work, front lever, back lever, and pullover. One continuous bar sequence linked a floorward descent, passage of the legs, an upward return, and parallel support. [4] [19] [40] [41] [45]
Muscle-up combinations used two distinct ideas. One slow transition passed through the inside, rotated, and pressed without relying on momentum, with a small bent-leg kick proposed as possible assistance. A separate dynamic variation used an inward leg passage to help generate upward power. [62] [65]
An inside-to-outside transition preserved more energy by removing the overhead swing and preceding descent. Connected L-sit and back-lever returns without releasing were also presented as stronger and more polished-looking finishes. [50] [59] [60]
Programming
Section titled “Programming”Reduce a planned set from five repetitions to three when the feet begin to descend. [66]
A return combination practiced with tired arms may feel easier near the beginning of training. Performing the exercise at the end can still be useful, although it may feel tiring. [57] [64]
