Horse Stance

These notes combine advice from 39 reviewed passages across 14 workouts.

Horse stance is a standing position set with the feet apart. Its width can range from narrow to very wide. It can be trained as a static hold or form test and also appears as a low position within separate transition drills. [7] [8] [13] [17] [28]

The main technical demands are an upright torso, a stable base, and sustained whole-body tension. Correct upright form can place substantial load on the calves. [13] [14] [16] [17] [18] [21] [23] [24]

Foot direction also varies. Some versions turn the feet inward, and one current practice allowed an outward turn. Corrected test and upright versions used forward-facing feet with a 90-degree position. [2] [5] [13] [14] [18]

Keep the hips and lower back straight as you lower. Shift the hips backward as if sitting on an invisible chair, maintain the intended 90-degree seated position, sit as low as possible, and avoid bouncing. [5] [6] [9]

Keep the torso upright without tipping forward. Draw the shoulder blades back, reduce rounding through the back, open the chest, and continue breathing. [13] [14] [16] [18]

Use the arm position that belongs to the drill. Place the hands behind the head for the formal test. During an upright-alignment drill, extend and press the arms forward to help the hips travel farther back while the torso remains vertical. [13] [15] [16]

Use a mirror for immediate form correction or take a brief profile view to check upright alignment. During regular execution, face directly forward when that orientation creates better stability than turning sideways. [5] [14] [19] [22]

Brace the trunk and knees, align the shoulders, keep the fingers together, and press actively into the floor. Maintain tension from head to toe so the position stays solid instead of swaying. [21] [23] [24]

Correct upright form can place substantially more load on the calves. Favor a short hold in this corrected form over a much longer hold in the previous form; the specific comparison was 20 seconds against two minutes. [17]

A supported variation can use partial contact with a wall. If fatigue prevents continuing, lean fully against the wall. [1] [4]

Inward leg mobility can increase horse-stance range and make the position more comfortable. The same mobility can support more comfortable Romanian deadlift practice. [11] [12]

Related horse-position mobility work can increase overall movement capacity. [30]

In the wall-free horse-dance variation, maintain body tension. Slightly widen the feet when that adjustment makes the movement easier. [26] [27]

For side transitions, move slowly and under control from one horse position to the other without standing fully upright. Keep the upper body tense and vertical. [28] [31]

In a ball drill, touching the ball is sufficient in one horse-position variation. Another variation allows the ball to be lifted. [29]
