Equipment selection

These notes combine advice from 141 reviewed passages across 91 workouts.

Avoid equipment that does not serve a real training purpose. Some machines and devices are useless gimmicks, such as rotating disks found in some exercise parks, while some outdoor exercise machines are fully suited to calisthenics and can support front-lever holds and handstand attempts. [3] [47] [85]

Choose equipment you are comfortable using. When two similar setups both work, pick the more comfortable one. [14] [15]

Repeated use teaches you which bars, bands, and dumbbells suit you, and a quick trial of the grip tells you whether a bar is good or bad. [52] [53]

Solid, filled equipment is preferable to hollow plastic pieces that rattle. The correct equipment for a movement is firm rather than soft, since softness messes up the movement. [80] [115]

Online ordering may be better, but physical inspection can help confirm that equipment matches expectations. Domyos equipment is poor quality and best avoided. [56] [102]

Look for a bar diameter around 28 to 32 millimeters. The bar should be thin enough that your grip reaches about the third joint of the thumb, because a thicker bar pushes the thumb upward and is harder to hold. A thicker bar is harder to pull on but can build more strength, while a thinner bar is more comfortable for pulling. [20] [49] [50]

Bars with a rotating bearing are slippery and hard to hold and do not allow a false grip. They make hanging and pulling noticeably harder. [4] [27] [40]

A continuous straight bar makes movement paths and endpoints easy to judge, while a bar with an open middle is confusing because you cannot see where the line passes. For typewriter pull-ups, use a straight bar without protrusions. [87] [127]

A slight curve in a bar can come from the load, and some bars are made with a deliberate curve. A bar that moves or gives under load makes the movement slightly harder. [111] [130]

Choose a bar long enough to open both arms fully during the movement. If you can open to the left and right sufficiently, the bar length is right, and some lifting work requires a long bar. [43] [86]

Equipment length affects difficulty, because a longer implement can make a movement harder. [33]

Match bar size to the task. Switch to a bigger bar when the current one causes foot contact and distraction, and for high-bar work choose a longer bar. [25] [28]

Football goals and metal passages can serve as pull-up bars, though their bars tend to be thick. In some regions, pull-up bars are common in every neighborhood. [22]

Bar height matters for the task. For hanging work a slightly higher bar is preferable. A higher bar may also swing more than a lower bar, and lack of swing is the main problem. [26] [110]

For jump-assisted muscle-up practice, set the bar around eye level. A small jump should land you in a false grip and one continuous movement, while a bar that is too high makes the jump harder and breaks the flow. [46]

Bar height changes the setup of floor-based work. A low bar allows pressing from a reclined position, while a high bar with a chair makes the back slide toward the shoulders. [105]

Pulling is possible on a low bar, and low bars also work for movements done like a back lever. Some setups make pulling somewhat harder than others. [106] [109]

A high bar lets you lower your legs as far as you want, so the abdomen gets less work. A floor bar keeps the legs constrained and is best when the goal is working the hands. [13]

A home bar may not be enough for explosive bar skills. For attempts and explosive exits, work on an appropriate outdoor bar. [12]

Gripping a support gives extra strength. Planche practice is easier on parallel bars or parallettes than on the floor, because the grip holds you and lets you draw power from the inside of the hand. Some holds are also a bit easier on parallettes than on the floor. [23] [35] [51] [60] [75]

For forward static holds, floor parallettes can give a cleaner line than parallel bars, where the hips tend to rise slightly. [24]

Compared with a pull-up bar setup, parallel bars make push-ups harder but make balancing easier. Handstand work can also be easier on parallel bars than on the floor. [21] [54]

Elevated parallettes make L-sit variations more comfortable because of the elevation. For an L-sit attempt, set the bars narrower so the hands are closer and strength is easier to gather. [83] [131]

A fist position on parallel bars makes the pushing feel stronger, while a pillow target can limit how low you can descend. [48]

For starting out, parallettes are a very good option, and a jump rope is another useful purchase. [59]

When parallel bars are available, use them instead of a chair. A chair is a substitute for when there is no parallel bar. [2]

When choosing a training area, look for one with sturdy parallel bars, because they are rare and very useful. [95]

Portable supports such as parallettes can replace a mounted dip bar and may work even better. For movements where the back must be free, lower the support so it ends below your back. [125] [129]

Keep support height appropriate to the task. For assisted balance work, use a support around knee height, because a higher edge gives more elevation and a firm edge is better for standing practice. Also keep the support height low enough that you can place a foot on it. [29] [30] [124]

Use a dip setup when the alternative does not let the back or waist pass through, because dips give better control. An open-backed bar lets you swing and come down to the side. [117] [120]

Keep practice markers as small as possible. Their only role is to mark a reference point. [11]

A support that is too high is unsuitable for Bulgarian split squats because the foot cannot be secured firmly. [114]

Rings rotate and conform to the athlete, which makes some movements easier. One-arm pull-ups and inward turns are commonly easier on rings than on a fixed bar, and rings can feel more comfortable because the sides move separately. [9] [38] [58] [62] [97] [107] [108]

The same freedom makes other movements harder. On rings, front and back lever positions can open outward, so a fixed bar is more stable and comfortable for those holds. [19] [96]

Start one-arm pull-up work on rings before moving to a fixed bar, because the rings rotate and adjust to you in the air. [38] [97]

Everyday furniture can serve as equipment. A high chair works as a support for some movements, and a chair or armchair both work for seated work. [37] [74]

A seat cushion underneath can make a setup more comfortable, and the same setup can be used for planche pulls. [94]

Low benches positioned toward the floor are used for lower-chest work. [78]

For sliding movements, improvise sliders with nylon bags on the hands or a rough towel. They let you slide easily on the floor. [36]

Carry a portable board about shoulder width for handstand work. It can be placed on concrete or grass, and a board of similar size can also replace a book as a support. Such boards are usually found outside. For some purposes, calisthenics bars are preferable to boards. [7] [39] [66]

A dumbbell can stand in for the usual setup when you need to see how a movement finishes. [123]

Gym equipment should be stronger than the people who use it. [126]

For weighted stretching, a small object of about two to three kilograms is enough, and a shoe, a pillow, or a water bottle can serve. [5]

Use two equal weights rather than one when the movement needs the arms to open, such as back-bridge work, because a single weight limits the opening. [68]

Assistance bands should keep some stretch, because a completely rigid band behaves like a rope and is less appropriate. Power bands stretch less than red bands, which generally stretch more. Thinner resistance bands may roll more easily. [16] [63] [119]

Some bands hit specific points quickly, which is a useful quality in a band. [45]

A strap is more practical for adjusting position because you pass through once and then lengthen or shorten it. A thin strap slides forward during a movement, while a thick one does not. [17] [128]

For mobility work, a towel and a stick work equally well. Use a minimally stretchy implement such as a towel, and start the harder options slowly. [65] [70] [73]

A flexibility device that lets you stretch without a partner suits people who rely on flexibility, train alone, or work on splits. [55]

A weighted vest is more comfortable than hanging weights because the load does not dangle and swing below the body. Small weights can be added to it, and vests come in front-tie designs. [31] [57]

A classic dumbbell works for every movement, while some unusual adjustable dumbbells do not. An adjustable dumbbell system is more comfortable than lining up a full set of fixed dumbbells. [8] [34]

Dumbbells help address right-left imbalances, bring stabilizing muscles into play, and allow a more natural movement angle than a barbell. [79]

A large dumbbell can push the arm outward to avoid hitting the body, which adds load to the movement. Using a single dumbbell for an extension allows comfortable work with lighter weights. [82] [88]

A bulky weight is harder to control than a compact one of the same mass. Controlling the weight at the right point matters more than the number of kilos. [99]

Use a kettlebell for upward pressing and a barbell for deadlifts. For movements where the arms should hang, a kettlebell is easier to use than a dumbbell. [71] [72]

For some movements, such as the donkey kick, a dumbbell is not suitable, so know the correct grips for the equipment you use. [44]

Plates that are too small force you to bend too far toward the floor and break the movement connection, so use plates large enough for the exercise. Plastic plates are unreliable, since some take a bend quickly and others break easily. [6] [61] [69]

A simple bench setup is enough for bench press. Get an adjustable or folding bench if you can, and add plates as you progress. For bench work, buy a standard sturdy 20 kilogram bar rather than a plastic or very light bar, because plastic bars bend and do not accept every plate. [89] [90] [91] [93]

A calisthenics bar combined with a bench covers several exercises, including biceps work, overhead presses, and bench work. [64] [92]

Use a stopwatch for timing holds and rests. Counting seconds by feel drifts, so a digital stopwatch shows the time more reliably than an analog one. [41] [76]

Heart-rate monitors can be unreliable. Calibration can drift, and the problem shows up across different users. [1]

A grip trainer that works the fingers individually is a good option, and the black model is very hard to break. [100] [101]

Juggling balls that stick to the hand are more comfortable to use. [77]

A slightly curved implement can add difficulty to ab work. [116]

Some apparatus makes specific skills such as Cross and Flag possible to train and can strengthen you considerably. [112]

A tatami mat absorbs sound and provides a soft surface for movements, and some mats return to a flat shape even after being tightly bent. [10] [18]

Training a flare in a bucket is wrong because the body cannot rotate inside it. [121]
