Tuck Planche
These notes combine advice from 61 reviewed passages across 26 workouts.
Overview
Section titled “Overview”The hold demands firm whole-body tension. Keep the hips, knees, torso, arms, and legs tight so looseness in one area does not pull the position downward. [1] [44] [47]
Progression
Section titled “Progression”Build the skill through tuck, advanced tuck, straddle, and full planche. The progression is intended to be gradual because the full position requires a long development process. [1] [2] [3] [7] [15] [26] [32] [43]
Intermediate steps can vary. One route inserts a wolf variation, while another moves through a bent-leg straddle before straightening the legs. An athlete-specific example used the bent and straight straddle route because the athlete’s shoulder capacity and positions were considered suitable. [2] [4] [43]
Entries
Section titled “Entries”On parallettes, bring the feet forward, fold and draw the legs inward, shift the body forward, and lift lightly without jumping. Rising vertically with the legs produces an upright parallel-bar support; the demonstrated tuck-planche entry includes forward travel. [5] [6] [7] [8]
Other drills use different entries. You can slide the knees inward, lift upward with the feet already inside, or bring one leg inward before slowly drawing the other alongside it. [23] [29] [30]
A preparatory version keeps the knees on the floor. The active progression lifts the knees upward between the hands. [37]
Position and control
Section titled “Position and control”Compress the torso and pull the knees and legs fully inward while keeping the hold high. Lean forward only as far as needed to reach the tuck. As the hips open toward advanced tuck, a somewhat greater forward lean becomes necessary. [7] [9] [10] [11] [25] [27] [28] [29] [41] [44] [47]
Shoulder cues differ across the evidence. Several corrections call for pressing away from the support, pushing the shoulders upward, elevating the scapulae, tightening the arms, and rotating inward-facing biceps outward. A later tuck-planche correction instead calls for strong shoulder depression to stop the movement from traveling downward. The relationship between these cues remains unresolved. [9] [10] [17] [31] [42] [54]
Fingertip use also varies by correction. In one parallette entry, squeezing the fingertips caused contact with the support to break and was discouraged. Another tuck-planche correction used active fingertips together with scapular and arm tension. [9] [17]
Point the feet and ankles when flexed feet leave the toes touching the floor. The pointed position can provide the clearance needed to hold the tuck without toe contact. [13] [14] [21]
Finish the hold with an even descent. Avoid pitching forward when strength fades, and return slowly toward the starting position. [16] [27]
Equipment and setup
Section titled “Equipment and setup”Set parallettes close enough for comfortable support while leaving room for both legs to pass between them. Keep the required angled arm position so the setup does not become an upright support. [10] [11]
Elevated floor parallettes provide clearance and make the tuck planche easier. Floor work requires more leg compression and shoulder pushing, was considered more developmental, and allows the rising and lowering drills to be practiced without carrying parallel bars. [38] [39]
Chair progressions begin with a floor-raised tuck and then add proximity or foot assistance. The intermediate instructions differ: one version keeps the feet off the chair, while another moves toward placing them on it. In the fully assisted version, put the feet on the chair, keep the hands close, and extend the body forward. [49] [50]
Socks may make the setup more comfortable. [24]
Programming
Section titled “Programming”Begin with clean five-second holds and establish a comfortable balance before opening the position. Form remains the priority during these short efforts. [18] [22] [27] [35] [40]
Progression thresholds vary across the sessions. One approach uses five to ten seconds and says twenty seconds is unnecessary. Other approaches require ten seconds before opening, use a fifteen-second tuck plus five tuck push-ups before straddle work, or associate a twenty-second tuck with roughly two to two and a half seconds in a harder variation. These differences leave no single universal threshold. [15] [18] [20] [35] [40] [48]
Limit repeated attempts when the session contains other demanding movements, preserving enough strength for the remaining work. For frequent skill practice, the tuck planche can be trained daily or every other day. A combined handstand and tuck-planche plan gives handstands greater priority. [12] [19] [33]
Once the tuck balance is established, open one leg and later both legs while gradually widening the hip angle toward advanced tuck and straddle. [26] [35] [36] [43]
Strength variations
Section titled “Strength variations”For a tuck-planche push-up, keep the legs compressed while bending the arms. Descend slowly toward the ground, then press upward without losing the tucked position. [45] [53]
One combined drill starts with a high, tightly compressed five-second tuck. It then opens backward under control and finishes with one push-up. [44]
Push-up work can support planche strength. Greater tuck push-up capacity is used as part of preparation for opening toward straddle. [40] [51] [55]
A related descent can serve as preparation before tuck-planche descent practice is introduced. [52]
