Competition and performance
These notes combine advice from 30 reviewed passages across 22 workouts.
Overview
Section titled “Overview”Competition performance is judged on how correctly and cleanly a skill is executed. In gymnastics, the hardest skill does not generally earn the highest score; the skill done most correctly and cleanly does, so competitors build combinations that keep deductions low. Precise, complete landings matter more than adding height or extra rotations, and even a small landing adjustment can cost a large part of the score. [5] [6] [12]
Competition formats vary by discipline, and each has its own rules. Static skills often need only a brief hold to count, and calisthenics routines run about one and a half minutes. [3] [9] [28]
Judging and scoring
Section titled “Judging and scoring”Gymnastics has strict, clear rules. Even a small bend of the knee can zero the score, so athletes pursue a uniform, precise line to approach perfection. [26]
In one described competition format, the score starts at 10 and each mistake gradually reduces it. The performance must show both power and a static planche; if one leg moves on landing, 0.30 is deducted, and if both legs move, 0.70 is deducted. [10]
Building a routine
Section titled “Building a routine”When composing a routine, choose elements you can display perfectly within the available time. If a full planche would take two years to perfect, leave it out and use a handstand or Maltese handstand that can be ready in about six months. [11]
For a gymnastics routine targeting a 10.0 score, include enough difficulty to reach the target; the hardest skill available is not required. [17]
Competition formats
Section titled “Competition formats”What counts as a record and how records are categorized can vary by federation. One description lists pull-up and push-up records with duration-based categories such as one-hour, six-hour, twelve-hour, and twenty-four-hour efforts; another gives four pull-up categories: one minute, one hour, twelve hours, and twenty-four hours. [2] [15]
The described breaking tournament progresses from an elimination round to 16 competitors, then brackets of 8, 4, and 2. [24]
In team-based fitness competitions, teams assign tasks according to each person’s abilities, and the right strategy produces the best results. Competitors do not try to do everything themselves. [8]
In a timed push-up competition, a repetition counts when the chest touches a raised marker about the height of a tile and the elbows fully extend. The winner is the athlete with the most valid repetitions in one minute. [27]
Competitions can award an overall title and separate titles for each apparatus. A competitor can specialize in one apparatus, score zero on the others, and still become champion on that apparatus. [16]
Presentation and finishing
Section titled “Presentation and finishing”Finish a movement with a deliberate posture that shows the movement is completely finished and adds a gymnastic aesthetic. The presentation can follow different conventions for men and women and includes holding the position and looking outward. [1]
The final freeze break is always important. After finishing a set, make a deliberate ending. [23]
Physique athletes may shave and use darkening paint so that muscle details are easier to see in competition. [13]
Preparation and training
Section titled “Preparation and training”Preparation for a camp should start early, and explosive work is part of that preparation. [21]
Mindset and strategy
Section titled “Mindset and strategy”In breaking, people often cannot judge technical difficulty, so a backflip seems extraordinary even though it can be learned in about two weeks. Winners in such competitions tend to be show-oriented. [7]
Power moves combine artistic and sporting purposes. In a match, the purpose is fully sport. [18]
Trying to appear unaffected by fatigue is unnecessary when alone, but in boxing it can strongly affect the opponent. [29]
A fighter who looked as if he never tired through five rounds of a professional fight stopped and won the match. He had braced himself. [30]
