False-grip Hang
These notes combine advice from 7 reviewed passages across 5 workouts.
Overview
Section titled “Overview”The false-grip hang is a held bar position related to false-grip pulling and slow muscle-up practice. A hanging position that slides downward without the false grip may become easier to maintain once the false grip is set. [1] [6]
Establish an elevated position and muscular tension before pulling. Keep the back active during the hang. The arms do not have to be fully straight and may remain slightly bent. [2] [7]
Entering the hang
Section titled “Entering the hang”Use slight fingertip assistance to reach the false-grip position. Once the position is set, lift the feet and remain hanging there. [3]
Hand and wrist contact
Section titled “Hand and wrist contact”For the open false-grip variation, keep the hands open and let the fingers touch only lightly. Place the load on the upper contact area instead of gripping with the fingers, then apply force through the wrist from top to bottom. The position can slide if that contact area is left unloaded, and excessive load toward the elbow can make it slide inward. [4]
Muscular activation
Section titled “Muscular activation”If the target area is hard to feel during the hang, imagine gripping the bar or push inward strongly. Consciously contract that area together with the back. This coordinated contraction can make slow ascents and descents easier. [5]
Progression
Section titled “Progression”Build the exercise by holding at the relevant point and advancing gradually. The same general holding pattern can be used in false-grip pulling, false-grip hanging, and slow muscle-up practice. [1]
