Home training space
These notes combine advice from 51 reviewed passages across 43 workouts.
Overview
Section titled “Overview”Training at home mainly requires an open area. Having room to move is the main condition, and even a small space is enough to get much stronger. [9] [41]
Space and clearance
Section titled “Space and clearance”Rope jumping and jumping movements can both carry noise to the neighbors. When they cause problems, switch to a less disruptive exercise. [39]
A rug laid under the workout area absorbs the sound of landings. When space behind you is limited or noise is a concern, keep your balance and slowly draw the legs inward. [34] [38]
Adapting movements to the space
Section titled “Adapting movements to the space”If there is no room on one side, do the movement on the other side. When space is tight, use a smaller range of motion, for example a quarter circle instead of the usual half circle. [1]
Do the movement seated on the floor when there is room; the standing version suits the gym. [6]
If a radiator forces the body forward and prevents hand pressure, find a centered, flush support, open the feet a little more, and work from a slightly lower position. [4]
Position yourself forward enough that the foot clears a nearby chair. If it feels like a strike may happen, start farther back. [8]
A nearby couch can disrupt focus and make a descent feel less comfortable, while people training in wide spaces can let themselves go more freely. Working close to a wall can suit some exercises, and parkour practitioners commonly keep about that much space from the wall. [17] [49]
When no surface at the right height is available for a mobility exercise, use a wall instead; it can be the more comfortable option. [42]
Choosing movements for the home
Section titled “Choosing movements for the home”Choose exercises according to the equipment you have at home. Not everyone has a bar, which is why bar hangs may be dropped, and pull-ups are left out when there is nowhere to pull from. [24] [40]
Handstand and planche need no bar and can be practiced anywhere, while the other skills discussed require bar equipment. Rising-and-lowering movements are also portable, since you do not usually carry parallel bars with you. [22] [26]
Some conditioning needs more room than a home offers. A fast-running burst requires about 20 meters of space, so that section is cut when training at home. Double-unders belong outdoors, while cross-rope jumps work well as the home version. [20] [45]
A dip station is not required. This training can be done anywhere, even in the kitchen, with whatever is at hand. Well-built calisthenics parks can speed progress, but many people have progressed without them. [15] [21]
Furniture and objects as equipment
Section titled “Furniture and objects as equipment”Two chairs of the same size placed side by side make a solid support for dips. A bed can be too low for some of these exercises, while chairs give a better height. Two similar couches placed side by side and firmly secured can be used the same way for Russian dips. [2] [13] [35]
An L-shaped kitchen counter can take the place of parallel bars. For dips, two chairs or a counter that creates a corner both work; avoid curved supports, since they put the body in a bad position. [14] [32]
A couch edge can stand in for a large box, and two cushions placed on a couch can raise the working surface to about your own height. [7] [33]
A chair can support incline or flat pressing. Put a few things behind it, lean back, find the correct angle, and settle in. When the equipment you already have provides an incline option, there is no need to buy new equipment. [43] [44]
People without weights can train the shoulders well at home with a chair. Hold the chair by its rear legs, keep it positioned in front, and pull it up and down like a barbell. Grip closer to the base for a lighter load and farther toward the end for a heavier one. The exercise also increases grip strength and wrist control. [36] [37]
A simple bench is versatile home equipment; it works for curls and bench press. Benches, weights, and bars can be expensive for many people, and resistance bands can create a bench-like training effect at lower cost. [30] [31]
Anchor a resistance band through a door handle, or use a wall when there is no door handle. Do the band triceps exercise at a fixed support, or against a wall when no support is available. Keep a few resistance bands on hand for some movements, and use a bar when one is nearby. [27] [28] [46]
A grocery bag can be used for biceps curls as long as proper form is kept. When an object stands in for a bar, such as stepping on books, the supports must be the same height. [25] [29]
A sturdy, long bar mounted overhead gives you something to swing from and can support a small parkour course at home. A wall-mounted bar is a good option when installation is permitted. [3] [23]
When you come across a bar outside, hang from it for about ten minutes to get used to hanging. [16]
A garden provides a private outdoor area and can be arranged with a hammock and training equipment. [48]
