Bar Press
These notes combine advice from 53 reviewed passages across 23 workouts.
Overview
Section titled “Overview”The bar press is a pressing phase performed above a single bar. It can be trained as repeated strength work and used to finish several muscle-up transitions. The triceps contributes during the press, and the movement is treated as an important skill alongside L-sit pull-ups. [1] [2] [8] [14] [15]
Press position and range
Section titled “Press position and range”Set the hands open without wrapping the whole palm around the bar. Descend fully until the chest meets the bar or until reaching the deepest point immediately before the movement changes into a pull. Press back up from that point. [2] [9] [21] [29] [31]
Keep the hands around shoulder width. Hands placed too far inward can block the transition as the bar approaches. On a thick bar, bring the body close and open the hands to access a direct press. [12] [35] [45]
A false grip can help when the palm position prevents the turn into the press. From the false-grip position, muscular engagement and the press may feel easier. [20]
When the legs are held in an L-sit, keep the feet tight and aim slightly above the final L angle. The legs can then settle into a cleaner L shape during the descent. [4] [37]
The Deep Bar Press extends the bottom range. Lower the elbow slightly farther than in the usual bar-press path, then pull upward and press. [36]
Entering the press
Section titled “Entering the press”During a muscle-up entry, move the upper body toward the front of the bar, pull upward, rotate the chest, and reach the bar-press position promptly after the catch. Waiting after the catch can lose the position, while staying behind the bar can leave the transition stuck. [12] [14] [41] [42]
For a controlled ascent, extend the arm as it reaches bar height and shift the upper body forward. Raise and rotate the elbows and wrists at the appropriate time, then press without using a kick. [13] [39] [41]
Muscle-up transition drills
Section titled “Muscle-up transition drills”Chest contact can reduce the load on the supporting hand while the free hand moves. As a preliminary drill, shift forward, place the chest against the support, move the free hand, and press out. The progression can later move from elbow-and-chest support to one-arm, two-arm, and no-body-contact transitions. [7] [10] [11] [46]
Hold both the right- and left-side transition positions for about three to four seconds. These pauses develop the positions used between the pull and the final press. [6]
A dynamic transition uses the brief unloading created by a fast pull. Shift sideways during that window, place the first arm, place the second arm, and finish with the bar press. [8]
For explosive repetitions, preserve the established exit and accelerate specifically at the bar-press phase. For slow transition practice, maintain continuous muscular engagement and direct the back forward while keeping the wrist active. [16] [33]
Controlled descent
Section titled “Controlled descent”Begin a slow negative from the top. Lower the elbows as the body moves back, catch the small transition from pushing to pulling, and start pulling immediately while maintaining tension. Keeping the elbows high or beginning the pull late can cause a rapid drop. Continue by rotating the elbows gradually into the hang without gripping the bar. [3] [17] [18] [19] [22] [38]
After the bar press, either a forward or backward descent may be acceptable. [43]
Progressions and assistance
Section titled “Progressions and assistance”Use a grounded foot to simulate the transition, then reduce the weight placed on it gradually. Keep foot assistance minimal during the lift and remove it after passing the bar-press phase. Draw the abdomen inward as the movement continues. [32] [34] [35]
Band assistance should also decrease when observed performance shows that the rise needs little help. [40]
One staged plan used negative repetitions before positive repetitions. In that plan, the positive phase was expected after three or four weeks rather than being introduced immediately. [23]
Programming
Section titled “Programming”Direct presses and slow negatives can be programmed as separate phases. A press-focused block can leave out slow descents and momentum so pressing quality is preserved. In another structure, complete the direct presses first and reserve the slow negatives for the end. [5] [24]
Prioritize reaching the transition point and pressing from it. A failed press is preferable to continuing with short partial repetitions solely to complete a target count. [27]
If a dip setup feels excessively wide, a bar press variation can replace it. [44]
