Downward-Facing Dog
These notes combine advice from 14 reviewed passages across 13 workouts.
Overview
Section titled “Overview”Downward-Facing Dog serves as a mobility position and a transition point in several drills. The basic shape emphasizes grounded heels, while plank transitions add deliberate core bracing and spinal-wave transitions require straight arms with coordinated shoulder-blade movement. [6] [11] [12] [13] [14]
Basic position and mobility drills
Section titled “Basic position and mobility drills”Keep the heels on the floor in Downward-Facing Dog. When it follows upward-facing dog or another upward extension, move into the reversed shape and settle the heels down. [6] [10]
During the paired cat and Downward-Facing Dog drill, look forward while bringing the chest toward the floor. [5]
Three-legged variation
Section titled “Three-legged variation”For the introductory three-legged-dog entry, straighten the rear leg and keep its heel grounded. Open the stance only enough for the front toes to touch, then place the hand farther forward. Save the fully upright version for a later progression. [2] [3]
Three-legged dog can also provide a handstand exit. Move one hand slightly closer to the wall and keep looking between the hands. A small object placed there can serve as a fixed visual target. [4]
Dynamic transitions
Section titled “Dynamic transitions”To perform a spinal wave from Downward-Facing Dog to upward-facing dog, keep the arms straight and actively coordinate the shoulder blades as the body moves forward. Press through the movement, reach forward under control, pause briefly at the shoulder-blade position, and then direct the gaze upward. [11] [12]
During plank-to-Downward-Facing-Dog repetitions, move slowly and brace the core throughout. Apply the same focus when beginning on the forearms, rising from the plank, and shifting back into Downward-Facing Dog. [13] [14]
Related drill distinctions
Section titled “Related drill distinctions”Keep the fixed-hand forward-and-back jump drill separate from Downward-Facing Dog. Plant the hands, jump forward and backward, push through the hands while traveling back, and place the hips farther back before beginning the next jump. [1]
A wall-supported stretch places more body weight into the position than the backward pull used in Downward-Facing Dog. This difference may make the wall-supported version feel stronger. [7]
Programming contexts
Section titled “Programming contexts”The routine called Yaşam Pınarı yoga uses a Downward-Facing-Dog-to-upward-facing-dog transition as one part of a five-movement sequence. The other parts are a hip raise, a turning movement, a chin exercise, and the reverse of a sit-up. [9]
