Barbell Row

These notes combine advice from 5 reviewed passages across 1 workout.

The barbell row is an externally loaded pull used to develop the back after bodyweight capacity has been established. Its main technical demands are control of the back angle, a braced trunk, a stable hip position, a downward gaze, and a consistent path toward the abdomen. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]

Learn the position with a light load. Give particular attention to the back angle so that the intended muscles work through correct form before the load increases. [1] [5]

Place the hands just outside knee width and brace the abdomen. Send the hips back as the torso angles forward, and look roughly 45 degrees toward the floor. Keep the feet slightly angled without opening the hips outward, hold the load in front of the knees, and pull toward the abdomen. The same position and pulling pattern can be used with dumbbells. [2] [4]

External loading can provide further back development once a trainee has established bodyweight pulling capacity. [3]
