Pullover

These notes combine advice from 88 reviewed passages across 46 workouts.

The pullover moves the athlete from below a bar to a position above it. It can develop strength and lower-abdominal involvement, provide an efficient entry into free-bar combinations and bar presses, and help with climbing onto a higher surface. [7] [17] [27] [31]

Learn the component actions before attempting the complete movement. Build the required pull-up and leg-pulling actions, use leg raises when the athlete cannot complete the leg path, and train the core, legs, and basic exercises alongside upper-body strength. [13] [26] [64]

One straight-leg routine begins from a hang with the legs touching the bar between the hands. Descend, draw the legs in, and transition into the pullover. In a related front-position variation, keep the legs straight toward the bar and pull upward. [18] [49] [50]

Give the lowering phase close attention and control it as slowly as possible. In the coached half pullover, keep the knees and arms straight, pull quickly, and then lower slowly. [1] [2]

When the backward phase feels unstable or rushed, reduce the speed until the movement follows a controllable personal pace. [4]

For partial lower-abdominal work, descend only to the assigned point and actively draw in the lower abdominal area before repeating. [8]

Keep the path direct instead of wrapping around through a twist. In a paused progression, pull to the target position, wait there, and avoid lowering immediately between repetitions. [46] [61]

Use separate drills for different parts of the action. In the tucked drill, draw the elbows and knees in, extend the legs toward the bar, and return. In the rolling drill, roll first, extend the legs vertically, roll back, and descend. Increase the lowering range gradually through bent-knee work toward the eventual straight-knee, open-foot version. [14] [15] [16]

Other skills can use only part of the pullover path. In the coached front-lever transition, follow the pullover path and reverse it before the pullover is complete. [19]

Rings change the point around which the body rotates. Pull the rings and hands inward, then perform the pullover over the tops of the hands. [55] [56]

When the bar setup is unsuitable, a ring substitute can move from an L-sit through a pull-up to a paused candle-like position, then return to the L-sit. [57]

Limited space requires a close path. Draw straight legs slightly inward and keep the body close. If the supports block the usual route, pause in the L-sit, lower, and then begin the movement. [58] [59]

In the seated version, begin with the arms overhead, perform the pullover, and lower very slowly. When it is linked to a roll, lower slowly to the elbows before rolling. [43] [44]

A linked L-sit and pullover can also be performed without speed, acceleration, or swinging. That execution displays the athlete’s ability to rise through strength alone. [60]

Muscle-up pullover formats use different details. One lowers slowly and performs the half pullover before reaching the full bottom after each muscle-up. Another keeps the feet off the floor and avoids fully straightening the arms before repeating. For consecutive pullovers, maintain the grip through each descent. [6] [11] [48]

The pullover can establish positions needed for later work. An instructed inverted-hang entry uses an outside-in grip and a pullover to the upright position. A false grip can be set by rising through a pullover, adjusting the grip at the top, and then descending. [3] [53]

Use a bottom-to-top pullover to enter a bar press or reach the top for related negative work. Rise vertically before starting the press. [31] [34] [41]

A longer combo rises by pullover without shifting the hands, performs five bar presses, descends slowly through an L-sit, and continues with five tucked front levers followed by five back levers. [37]

For repeated negative work, use a pullover to return to the top for each repetition. One format descends into an L-sit before rising again, and these repeated ascents extend the sequence. [35] [36] [42]

Pairing pullovers with consecutive slow negative descents can produce substantial fatigue. [65]

A speed-contrast combination descends slowly from a muscle-up into a back lever, then regroups quickly and rises through a pullover. The slow negative displays static strength and can also serve as a transition. [32] [33]

One competition combination moves from a pullover through the legs into a back lever, then descends into a muscle-up. Another descends from above the bar through skin-the-cat into the back lever. Choose the path required by the drill because some drills use a direct passage from below. [21] [22] [24]

In the assigned front-lever sequence, perform three pull-ups, hold the front lever, transition through a pullover, and push at the top. [45]

Keep the legs, knees, and fingertips tense, make each position clear, and finish the specified transition toward the front. In the L-sit sequence, rise by pullover, lower slowly, complete the assigned leg touches or pull-and-extend repetitions, and finish with another pullover. [38] [39] [40] [51]

Develop more than one way to continue from the top. A forward swing or a pullover can provide another route to rise again. [52]
