Bilateral practice

These notes combine advice from 52 reviewed passages across 39 workouts.

Bilateral practice means training both sides of a movement rather than only the preferred side. It develops the body more evenly because the load is placed on different points, and it makes the brain work better and helps the mind grasp the movement more fully. [4] [7] [15] [21] [23] [27] [29] [31] [34] [40] [45]

Practicing both sides prevents the mind from becoming accustomed to only one side. The other side provides a different balance challenge, and a movement practiced in its opposite direction may take longer but helps the mind learn it more fully. [3] [27] [33]

Side-to-side differences in strength and balance are normal and usually come from habitual use of one side. Train both sides of a movement rather than only the preferred side, and keep the work even so the sides stay balanced. [5] [15] [18] [26] [29] [31] [34] [40] [45]

When one side is clearly weaker, give the weaker side focused practice to reduce the difference. A weaker side should normally reach roughly 60 to 70 percent of the stronger side. [14] [30] [38]

Alternate between right and left rather than repeating the same side, to keep the work even and give the brain relief. Do equal amounts in both directions and reverse the hand placement when changing direction. [1] [2] [13] [17]

Learn and strengthen one side first, then begin the other side. Try both sides of a movement to see which direction feels more comfortable. [7] [8] [24]

Change turning direction so the same side is not always used. For rotation drills, working both sides is better than alternating one right and one left. For asymmetrical stance variations, use equal repetitions with each foot position. [42] [49] [50]

The direction of a handstand exit can be changed rather than fixed to one side. For the handstand entry, practice both sides, establish balance, then control and pause the entry to build consistent 8 to 10 second holds. The descent can be performed from either side of the wall, so get accustomed to both sides. [9] [12] [52]

For the muscle-up, practice holding the position on both sides to build strength for the transition. Perform a weighted forward-and-back lunge without jumping into the step, using both legs equally. [10] [11] [19]

Practice the cartwheel in both directions, coordinating the arm lift with the descending foot. Turning toward the opposite side can cause confusion because the body’s axis rotates that way. [22] [25]

Choose a flare direction that suits you, but practice footwork in both directions to balance the body. Progress the movement by alternating which foot is drawn in, then opening one side at a time before opening both sides together. [32] [36]

Use a controlled unilateral raise with a brief hold, then lower and stretch before changing sides. Perform the biceps curl one arm at a time, alternating right and left. [28] [35]

In reverse and regular sit-ups, move from the right shoulder toward the left shoulder and alternate the right and left sides. In elbow-to-hand transitions, rise and lower leading with the same side; if alternating gets confusing, do two repetitions per side. After a right-to-left repetition, start the next one on the left and finish on the right, keeping the sequence in order. For this core movement, thread one foot forward through the space between the other foot and hand, alternating sides. [41] [43] [44] [46]

A wrist-preparation sequence can include fist rotations in both directions, opening and closing the hands, and gentle inward stretching or pressing on both sides. During the side-opening leg swing, keep the body upright and move sideways; wall support is permitted, and work both sides. [6] [39]

Working one side before switching can slightly improve mobility and direct attention to the worked side. The circle drill is dynamic mobility work that raises energy, prepares the body for other movements, and develops the bilateral circle. Occasionally practice the arm-opening detail on both sides: hold, go to the maximum, then open the hand to feel the full line of tension. [16] [20] [51]
