Scapular Shrug

These notes combine advice from 11 reviewed passages across 5 workouts.

The scapular shrug uses a slow, controlled rise and descent of the shoulders to train scapular movement and the trapezius. Its main technical demand is isolating the shoulder lift while keeping the core and arms firm. [1] [2] [9]

For the upright drill, brace the body and keep the torso upright, with the arms as close as possible to 90 degrees to the floor. A slightly wider stance is acceptable, but keep the hips from shifting forward or backward. [1] [3] [4]

Maintain tension through the arms and core, and allow only the shoulders to rise. Reach as high as possible at the top without letting the body drift away from its set posture. [3] [9]

For the hanging version, begin from a full vertical hang and move only the shoulders up and down. Let them rise toward the ears, and pay particular attention to the position of the back. [5]

A vertical hang places the body directly beneath the bar. Gravity pulls straight down in this position, which can remove some alignment errors that can occur during a handstand. [5]

For the described dumbbell version, angle the dumbbells slightly inward and use a very slight forward lean. This setup differs from the upright posture used in the earlier drill. [1] [3] [4] [6]

With either dumbbells or a barbell, keep the arms nearly straight, allowing only a small two-to-three-degree bend. Keep the lift at the trapezius instead of creating it by bending the arms. [7]
