Equipment care and maintenance

These notes combine advice from 17 reviewed passages across 12 workouts.

Equipment care is the routine of storing, cleaning, and handling training gear so it stays usable and safe. A mat can be rolled up or left flat on the floor, a jump rope is stored in a coil rather than a fold, and a weighted vest needs machine washing on a regular schedule. These habits protect the gear and keep it ready for use. [1] [7] [8] [15]

Gear wears with use. Ropes wear fast where they strike the ground, a heavily used bar can become too slippery to grip, and a rope whose wires have frayed should be replaced. Noticing these problems early is part of caring for the equipment. [5] [6] [12] [13]

Roll a mat up or leave it flat on the floor for storage. It opens out on its own when you use it, and keeping it open causes no problems. [1] [7]

When a mat does need to be folded, fold it into thirds. Hold it at one point, fold it over in sequence, and pull from the front. [2] [3]

Store a jump rope in a coil, never in a fold. Folding puts sharp corners into the cable, and those corners cause serious problems. Coil the rope in a loop, or wrap it around your wrist so it stays looped. [8]

Ropes wear out quickly, and hitting the ground is one of the biggest common problems. A rope that keeps striking the floor will not last long. [5] [6]

When you pull a rope upward, wrap it as you pull. [9]

Watch the cable’s condition. Once the metal wires start to fray and spread outward from the cable, the rope is finished. Replace it and use a new one. [12]

A weighted vest needs regular washing. Machine wash it every two days with the weights removed, because the vest’s hygiene matters. [15]

When you train in socks, the foot slides a little. Do not put all your weight on it, because the friction can tear the sock. [10]

Handle a training cable and place it with care. Where the cable lies matters, because careful handling and placement help it last longer. [16]

Heavy use can make a bar extremely slippery, almost as if it were oiled. With almost no grip left, pulling on such a bar becomes about one and a half times harder. [13]

Keep metal training equipment away from seawater. Metal that goes into the sea comes out rusty, and saltwater exposure causes the rust. [14]
