Dead Hang

These notes combine advice from 25 reviewed passages across 13 workouts.

A dead hang places the body in a full vertical hold beneath a bar, where gravity pulls straight down. A strong hold may indicate back and shoulder strength. Timed challenges emphasize a tight grip, while controlled drills also demand management of swinging. [2] [9] [11] [17] [19] [21] [22]

Bar hanging can also support bridge practice. Use the hang by itself for this purpose rather than adding pull-ups. [10]

Squeeze the bar as tightly as possible during a timed hanging challenge. For swing control, grip firmly through the palms rather than relying only on the fingers. [2] [17] [19] [21] [22]

Bar conditions can change the difficulty considerably. A slippery, rotating bar causes the grip to slide and makes remaining on the bar much harder. [1]

Home programs must account for whether a suitable bar is available. When several bars can be used, prefer a slightly higher one. [7] [15]

Aim for maximum stillness in a two-arm hang. Push firmly against the bar, brace the abdomen with a slight inward draw, squeeze through the palms, and keep the feet airborne. Continue applying tension until any swinging becomes minimal. [17] [19] [21] [22]

When the entry creates some swing, stillness may take several seconds to develop. In a 20-second drill, it may appear only during the final five or six seconds. Continue holding without touching the ground while working toward stillness. [18]

Brief toe support can provide a progression toward the unsupported position. Begin on the toes, increase grip and body tension, then remove the foot and work toward an airborne hold without swinging. [17] [19] [20] [21] [22]

A one-arm hang introduces rotation. Actively resist the turn, keep the torso straight, and limit swinging, although complete stillness is not required in the unilateral drill. If wall assistance is being used, press the free arm against the wall to prevent rotation. In the unsupported version, keep the free hand clear. If a foot touches the ground, widen the gap. [4] [14] [23] [24]

The benchmark presented for adults aged 30 to 40 is a one-minute hang. Measure the current duration first, then increase it gradually in small increments toward the chosen target rather than jumping directly to a much longer hold. [3] [6]

When an outdoor bar is available, use it for about ten minutes of hanging practice to build familiarity with the movement. [5]

Current pull-up and hanging abilities can differ between individuals. One person may hang well without being able to perform a pull-up, while another may perform pull-ups but have a short hang. A cited theory proposes that 15 pull-ups correspond to a 90-second hang. [8]

For a shoulder-control drill, begin in a full vertical hang and move the shoulders up and down. Keep attention on the back throughout the movement. [11]
