Jump rope selection
These notes combine advice from 15 reviewed passages across 11 workouts.
Overview
Section titled “Overview”Plastic jump ropes tend to twist and are poor quality, so avoid them. Ropes that tangle during use make early cross practice problematic. [1] [3]
Rope design and materials
Section titled “Rope design and materials”The best choice is a simple rope with no bearing in the handle. You hold the rope directly and turn it. The rotating section of many ropes is problematic, which is why people generally choose a single-rope design. [5] [7]
The simpler the rope, the better. With a simple rope you do not worry about it snagging or bending, so you can stay relaxed. [8]
Handling during practice
Section titled “Handling during practice”A rope that stays straight is easy to gather back up. Rubber ropes can get caught even when the mistake is not yours, which is unnecessary and ruins morale; a straight, non-elastic rope may be easier to recover with. [4]
You can hold and turn the rope the way boxers do. A heavy rope does not bend, and doubles work well with it. [4]
Speed and power
Section titled “Speed and power”Some ropes are less suited to very high-speed skipping; a different rope is better for faster work. [9]
A thin rope speeds up like fishing line, which can make double-unders easier. A thin metal rope may take some time to get used to; after adapting, speed improves. [11] [12]
Some ropes have more power and feel stronger during use. [13]
Comfort and safety
Section titled “Comfort and safety”Choosing your own rope
Section titled “Choosing your own rope”Some ropes only allow one rhythm. Check that your rope suits the rhythm you practice. [6]
As you keep practicing, you can decide for yourself which rope is better for you. [15]
