Straddle Planche
These notes combine advice from 35 reviewed passages across 20 workouts.
Overview
Section titled “Overview”Straddle planche is a planche variation held with the legs apart. Full planche closes the feet, requires a lower position, and is substantially harder. Planche work at this level can develop the shoulders and scapula, while straddle can serve as a practical goal before the extra training and distinct technique needed for full planche. [3] [9] [15] [25] [28]
Maintain tension throughout the body. Engage the glutes, hips, and legs while using scapular protection and shoulder depression. Move the front shoulder forward, load it, and keep the body on the intended line; a relaxed segment can cause the hold to descend. [1] [6] [16]
Technique
Section titled “Technique”Open the legs and keep the hips tight as the shoulders travel forward. Avoid flaring the hips outward. For the straddle transition, create the demonstrated opening through the lower-back area and place the shoulders slightly farther forward. [6] [29]
Set the support position before entering. Stabilize it, enter with the legs already open, and settle into the hold lightly and under control. Rotate the biceps when they drift too far inward. [7] [22]
A correct tuck planche leans forward. A vertical leg lift on parallettes is a different position. In advanced tuck, the lower back, knees, and elbows move farther back to create more extension before the straddle stage. [12] [21]
If the hips remain too high in straddle, treat that as a missing prerequisite rather than accepting the shape. Return several levels and work directly on the back-related weakness before trying the advanced position again. [19]
Progression
Section titled “Progression”Master tuck planche first, then extend into advanced tuck and load that position further before attempting straddle. Full planche follows straddle. One stated progression adds a wolf variation between advanced tuck and straddle, so that stage can be used when it fits the training sequence. [1] [4] [5] [8] [12] [13] [17] [18] [21]
Beginners can regress a full entry drill to an open-leg version, then to bent-leg pulls. Later, a slightly bent straddle can bridge the gap to a straight-leg straddle when shoulder capacity and positioning are adequate. [10] [14]
Straddle planche is a substantial goal by itself. The step from straddle to full is especially large and requires additional work. Planche development can take years, with some trainees spending more than three years refining strength, form, and technical details. [9] [25] [28]
Practice and benchmarks
Section titled “Practice and benchmarks”Use five- or ten-second holds to learn the straddle line, keeping every short hold well formed. Build the initial tuck toward roughly ten seconds. A fifteen-second tuck hold plus five tuck push-ups is another stated readiness benchmark for starting straddle work. [6] [13] [20]
On the easier bar version, target a thirty-second hold as a benchmark for holding the straddle planche for at least five seconds. [32]
When the straddle begins to shake, bend the legs and continue at the tuck level. Proper push-ups can also condition the limiting area, while planche push-ups build the front-shoulder strength needed for straddle. [26] [27] [30]
For assisted practice, first master the drill with foot support. Gradually reduce the load carried by the feet, use straight-wall work, and then move into straddle practice. [31]
Supporting development
Section titled “Supporting development”Work on opening the legs as widely as practical. A wider straddle can help distribute the weight in the hold. [33]
Lower leg muscle or mass may make straddle and full planches easier, while greater leg mass can make them somewhat harder without making them impossible. Develop enough upper-body strength to keep the hold rigid, and continue training both the lower and upper body rather than neglecting one area. [11] [23]
Wrist load and negatives
Section titled “Wrist load and negatives”Practice the negative phase consistently as part of planche training. [24]
