Balanced training
These notes combine advice from 67 reviewed passages across 56 workouts.
Overview
Section titled “Overview”Balanced training means developing the whole body evenly rather than concentrating on one area or skill. Strength, flexibility, and balance should be trained together because they complement each other, and training should strengthen existing strengths while improving weaker areas. Some movement skills require balanced development of strength and flexibility; a deficit in either quality can limit performance. [2] [5] [8] [9] [11] [14] [15] [22] [25] [27] [36] [58] [59]
Whole-body development
Section titled “Whole-body development”When one part of the body is weak, the other parts cannot progress proportionally, and weak body areas are linked with difficulty performing movements. Doing movements in mixed directions rather than one direction works different areas, and working the smaller muscle groups improves balance. Doing more pull-ups and similar exercises increases definition, and this comes from training beyond simply lifting weights. [3] [11] [12] [21] [32] [53] [63]
Performing only a single movement provides limited benefit. Three basic movements can provide a complete training foundation, and seven foundational movements can be progressed to cover the major body regions in a full-body program; the Basic Seven is a very good exercise set that works the whole body. Moderately improving all items can produce greater cumulative progress than maximizing a few items while leaving the rest at zero. [47] [52] [56] [60] [61]
Programming
Section titled “Programming”A program can emphasize a preferred goal while still including work across other training areas. Programming can emphasize movements to which a trainee is well suited while progressively developing the others, and when one target area is weaker, training can emphasize that area. Address individual weak areas, such as a shoulder that develops more slowly than the core, and use weight training as assistance to strengthen whichever muscle group is weak. [10] [23] [30] [41] [45] [57]
Gradually include core training so it does not lag behind other areas in the program, and give importance to the abdomen in both light and heavy workouts. Balance push-focused training with pulling work, and include deadlift-preparation work even in sessions that do not directly train deadlifts. Pairing an upper-body exercise with squats covers both upper- and lower-body work, while longer routines may reduce participation. Alternate which side starts a paired sequence so the work remains balanced. [6] [42] [48] [49] [51] [55]
Add balance work to every workout throughout life, alongside pulling and pushing movements. Complement ring training with work on a fixed apparatus rather than training only on rings. [1] [29] [31]
Keep leg training a consistent part of the program. Do not neglect leg training; legs are important for testosterone release, conditioning, and explosive energy. Strong legs are an important training priority that many people overlook. Calisthenics and gymnastics often de-emphasize the legs to reduce body weight and upper-body demands, but strong legs contribute to a solid stance and strength. Many gym routines emphasize the chest, shoulders, and triceps while giving less attention to the legs and abdominals. [3] [4] [7] [18] [40] [50] [62]
Posture and mobility
Section titled “Posture and mobility”Emphasizing the chest while neglecting the back can produce a hunched, gorilla-like posture. Rounded inward posture can result from overworking the chest while neglecting the back muscles and scapular control, rather than from excessive back development. Many fitness trainees develop shoulder and trapezius size and strength while lacking the bridge movement. After inward-focused shoulder work, regularly include gentle outward mobility; a slight outward stretch can be sufficient. Maintain flexibility while getting stronger, and do not neglect the elbows and shoulders. [13] [38] [43] [44] [65] [66]
Gymnastics and calisthenics
Section titled “Gymnastics and calisthenics”Gymnastics requires proficiency across six apparatuses, while a calisthenics athlete may excel in planche and similar movements but struggle in the other areas. Working with and observing others can broaden development, while focusing on one skill alone can lead to neglecting other areas. Heavier, more muscular legs make planche and front lever harder because the legs must be supported. [16] [17] [33] [34] [35] [67]
